Welcome to online Statistics at Broward College. You are about to depart on a journey that will require extreme dedication and self-discipline. I will be your guide throughout this process. I earned a B.S. and M.S in Mathematics, a B.A. in Theatre and an Ed. D. in Higher Education. I have been teaching mathematics for nearly 20 years, and Broward College has honored me with an Endowed Teaching Chair and a Classroom Research Award. I love statistics as it combines the beauty of mathematics with practical applications. I hope that you will discover the power of statistics as you explore the course subject. As you will soon discover, statistics is quite different from any other math course that you have taken. Many students who struggle with Algebra find that they excel with Statistics.It is very important that you maintain a disciplined study schedule, since you will be responsible for many hours of independent study. You will follow a detailed schedule for the required weekly readings, homework exercises, online discussions and tests (with specific due dates). You must meet ALL of the weekly deadlines according to the schedule in order to be successful in this course. This class covers several sections every week—approximately the same amount of material I would cover in a face-to-face course. The material covered in this course is the same material covered in a traditional face-to-face class. In order to succeed in this course, you MUST have good math skills, be an independent learner, and be able to use a computer, e-mail, and the Internet. Take a moment to read the rest of this document. This information will help you prepare for the online part of this course. My role is to help you be as successful as possible. Course Description
A
first course in statistical methods including such topics as collecting,
grouping, and
presenting
data; measures of central tendency, position, and variation; theoretical distributions;
probability; test of hypotheses; estimation of parameters; and regression and
correlation. Use of statistical computer software and/or a scientific
calculator (capable of performing 2-variable statistics) will be required.
Recommendation of the Mathematics Department or at least a grade of C in the
prerequisite course is required.

Learning Outcomes
The following are the outcomes that you should achieve by the end of the course: 1. The students should be able to organize, summarize, and illustrate data both in table and in graph form, as well as be able to interpret the meanings of such tables and graphs. 2. The students should be able to calculate measures of location, central tendency and dispersion, and distinguish between population parameters and sample statistics. 3. The students should be able to apply the definitions and rules of probability to solve problems involving discrete variables. 4. The students should be able to determine the probability distribution for a given experiment and random variable, and calculate its mean and standard deviation‚ 5. The students should be able to solve problems using normal distributions and apply the Central Limit Theorem for sample means. 6. The students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and structure of hypothesis testing by performing hypothesis tests in various situations. 7. The students should be able to apply the hypothesis testing concepts to a wide variety of different situations. 8. The students should be able to determine point and interval estimates for population parameters and to determine sample sizes for the estimation of parameters. 9. The students should be able to calculate the correlation coefficient, determine if there is a significant linear correlation, and find the line of best fit.Course Requirements

Methods of Instruction
This is a 3-credit hour fully online
course with/without proctored exams. In this class, you will engage in
structured out-of-class and online activities. The online activities may
include, but are not limited to, readings, discussions, essays, case studies,
research, and/or online quizzes and tests. See the course schedule for a
detailed description of activities. Students are responsible for regularly
reviewing the course schedule and completing all required assignments. Since this is a fully online course, anticipate spending at least ten hours per week on this course in order to be successful.
Orientation to Online Learning
To be successful in an online course, you should
assess your readiness to successfully engage in an online learning class at
Broward College. You can complete the Orientation to Online Learning to determine if an online class
is a right fit for you and to learn how to navigate the system. Upon completion of the orientation, you will
earn a certificate. Some professors
require you to submit this certificate during orientation, so make sure to save
it in an easily accessible folder on your computer.
Course Attendance and Participation Policy
During the first week of class, you
must complete the Syllabus Quiz from the course orientation, or you will be
withdrawn from the course. Simply logging into the course will not satisfy your
attendance during this time. As with an on-campus course, students who are
reported for non-attendance in an online course and are withdrawn are still
responsible for paying for the course. If you do not complete the requirements
of the orientation, you should drop the course by the official drop/add
deadline or expect to pay for the course.
It is very important for you to
actively participate in this online class. If you stop participating in class
discussions, do not submit assignments, or fail to take quizzes or tests prior
to the withdrawal date, you will be withdrawn from class and receive a W or, if
it is your third attempt, an F.
If you stop participating after the withdrawal date, you will receive an F. To avoid this situation, you should remain an active learner in this class and always communicate extenuating circumstances to your instructor. Ongoing communication with the instructor is critical to your course success. Completion of tests, assignments, and other class activities are used as indicators of your participation in order to satisfy this reporting requirement. HW: Your online homework assignments will be labeled as homework assignments. You can attempt the homework as often as you would like up to the moment it is due and utilize all the modes of assistance provided in the computerized program. Your highest grade for each homework assignment will be recorded. All of the homework for the semester will count as 150 points. All homework assignments will be due at 11:59 p.m. on the evenings listed on the assignment sheet. There will be no extensions to the deadlines for any reason. Please plan ahead! I hope to see everybody earning high scores for their HW grade. Of course, you are always welcome to try additional problems for extra practice.
Tests: You will have 10 unit tests in this course in addition to the midterm and final exams. Each test will be worth 20 points. You will take these tests online. You may not take a test after the end of the testing period and you will receive a grade of zero on any tests that you do not take by the due date. You may only take each test one time.
Exams: This course requires the completion of two proctored, on-campus exams. The midterm exam will be cumulative and be worth 300 points. The final exam will also be cumulative and will be worth 300 points. Please remember to bring your graphing calculator to the exams.
Discussions: We will also have several online discussions. You are expected to answer the discussion topic adequately. Sometimes one word answers will suffice and other times several paragraphs may be appropriate. All the discussions will be worth a total of 50 points. You will receive no credit for late postings.
Make-up Exam Policy
- There are no make-up exams for this course for any reason. If there are extenuating circumstances that interfere with a student's ability to complete the Midterm or the Final Exam, official documentation of the emergency must be provided to the instructor for review (e.g. hospital admission documents, court appearance notice, military deployment orders), and a meeting may be requested to discuss the situation with the BC Virtual Campus administration to identify appropriate options. Otherwise, a missed Midterm or Final Exam will result in a zero, and it would not be possible for the student to receive a passing grade for the course.

Enrollment for this course is restricted to those students who are able to meet weekly deadlines and are comfortable using a computer, e-mail and the Internet. If you want to enroll in this course, go to BC's Student Online System. You must pay for the course before you will be able to log into the course. There may be a delay after paying before your D2L login will be activated.
How to Access the Course
Follow these steps in order to log into

session in which the course is scheduled. Only students who have registered and
